This Basalt residence is an extensive remodel of a 1970s home, guided by a strategy of reuse and long-term sustainability. The existing foundation and building perimeter are retained to preserve embodied energy while adapting the home for contemporary family living.
The design builds on the original open plan, enhancing daylight and connection to the outdoors. North-facing clerestory windows bring consistent, diffuse light into the living spaces, balancing the southern exposure, where calibrated porch overhangs control solar gain and prevent overheating. This approach eliminates the need for interior shading, maintaining an uninterrupted relationship to the backyard—a protected, family-centered outdoor space.
To accommodate a growing family, two upper-level additions introduce a primary suite and children’s bedrooms. These volumes are connected by a bridge aligned with the north clerestory, allowing light to pass through the center of the home and reinforcing visual connections between levels.
Building on a strategy of retaining the existing foundation and perimeter while adding a new upper level, the plan establishes a generous, square footprint for the primary living spaces. Rather than subdivide this volume, the design uses warm wood screens and subtly staggered plan elements to define space while maintaining openness.
The kitchen, dining, living, and entry remain fluidly connected, supporting daily family life and informal gathering. Layered thresholds create moments of intimacy within the larger volume, while maintaining clear sightlines to the backyard—allowing parents to stay visually connected to their children in this protected outdoor space.
Material continuity reinforces this approach, with natural, tactile finishes at key touchpoints adding warmth and human scale. Above, the bridge and north-facing clerestory bring soft, consistent light into the center of the home, strengthening vertical connections and enhancing spatial depth.
The result is a home that balances openness and definition—expansive in feel, yet grounded in comfort, material richness, and family connection.
